History of Puteri UMNO

PUTERI UMNO HISTORY

The inception of Puteri UMNO was approved by the Supreme Council on 10th July 2000. On October 16 the wing was officially launched with the objective of attracting more young females to join UMNO.

Puteri UMNO was officially introduced to the public on April 9 2001. To realise its dream of having more young female professionals, Dato’ Seri Azalina Othman Said was made the pro-tempt chief. She later on appointed a few Exco to assist.

The youngest UMNO wing was launched by party president Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad on 3rd August 2001. Its first chief was Dato’ Seri Azalina Othman, a lawyer by profession who were always there to assist the party.

She was Minister of Youth and Sports in 2008 prior to fill up the Tourism portfolio. She is still the Member of Parliament for Pengerang and UMNO Division Head.

Her successor Datuk Noraini Ahmad, an economic graduate from University of Saskatchewan, Canada was once the Deputy Minister of Human Resources and Kota Tinggi MP.

Datuk Rosnah Abdul Rashid Shirlin was the third Puteri chief. She used to be Papar MP, Deputy Health Minister and Deputy Minister of Works in 2009. She is now an UMNO Supreme Council member and Wanita exco.

In 2013, Datuk Mas Ermieyati Samsudin was elected as Puteri chief. She is now the MP for Masjid Tanah, Melaka and was once Deputy Minister of Tourism.

Membership of Puteri Umno was initially only for Bumiputra females aged between 18-40 but after debated at the Supreme Council level, the ceiling age was limited to 35, except for 40 for the Ketua Puteri chief post.

This means that all Bumiputera females aged between 18 and 35 qualify to become Puteri UMNO members.
