Malay rights stolen? Proof it Mahathir!

AN Umno veteran has called for proof from former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad and his allies in Perikatan Nasional that Malay rights have been stolen during the unity government’s two years in power.

Othman Desa, head of the Umno Veterans group, questioned if the former prime minister had based his claims solely on the presence of the DAP in the unity government.

He said Mahathir was being unreasonable in making claims without proof. Mahathir had done so purely for his own political interests for the coming general election, Othman told FMT.

“All Mahathir is doing is to create anxiety among Malaysians about 3R (race, religion and royalty) matters, he said. “If you can, show your proof,” said the Umno Supreme Council member.

He said Malay rights had not been trampled, despite the presence in the government of a party frequently criticised for opposing matters related to the Malays and Muslims.

On Thursday, Mahathir and several PN leaders met in a roundtable discussion to oppose the “common enemy” of the Malays, with the former prime minister claiming that the community has been gradually deprived of its rights under the unity government led by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

The former Bersatu chairman also claimed that many vocal Malays have been pressured by the government, including with threats that they will be charged in court as criminals.

Shah Alam MP Azli Yusof of Amanah said PN and Mahathir are merely trying to rally support for the coming general election, and similarly called on Mahathir to elaborate on his claims.

“The opposition is using Mahathir to get political support, and Mahathir is clinging to them to protect his personal interests.

“Who are these Malays that have been pressured for being vocal? Have they been charged or arrested without reason? What Malay rights have been stolen?” Azli said.
