Umno Youth, Amanah butt heads over seats

TENSIONS are rising between Umno Youth and Amanah, as the latter seeks a more equitable share of seats to contest in the next Malacca and Johor state elections instead of using the Madani coalition’s “incumbency” formula.

Yesterday, Amanah communications director Khalid Abdul Samad suggested that if BN and Pakatan Harapan were to contest under the coalition government in Malacca and Johor, thorough consideration over seat allocations and negotiations must be taken into account to ensure fairness and equity.

Ongoing tensions between Umno and Amanah have spread beyond Johor and Malacca, with Kedah Amanah now being the latest to announce its likelihood of contesting solo in the upcoming 16th general election.

The party’s Kedah bureau said today that they have taken note of the state Umno and BN chapters’ similar inclination, and that they have chosen to respect this decision.

In his statement, Khalid suggested that should BN and PH contest under the Unity Government in Melaka and Johor, consideration must be given to the fair allocation of seats.

While acknowledging that BN controls the seats in both states, he said that priority to ‘incumbents’ is no more valid as it can sour relations among parties in the government.

BN won two-third majority in both states in the 2021 and 2022 elections.

The Melaka assembly dissolves automatically in December.

In his FB posting, Pemuda Umno chief Dr Akmal Saleh chided Khalid.

“No need to give warnings. What do you think of us? Just fight, no talking,” he said.
