THE Umno Supreme Council has reaffirmed the party’s commitment to the unity government.
Its secretary-general Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said the party would continue to strengthen and defend Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and his administration.
“Umno MPs and assemblymen will continue to support Anwar’s leadership,” it said in a statement.
He also said the Supreme Council agreed to organise state-level unity government conventions starting from January 2024.
The convention is aimed at fostering a better understanding among the government parties, Asyraf said.
Umno’s reaffirmation comes in the wake of Perikatan National chairman Muhyiddin Yassin’s call for the party to reassess its cooperation with Pakatan Harapan after PAS’s landslide victory at the Kemaman by-election last Saturday.
PAS candidate Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar, who is also the Terengganu menteri besar won the Kemaman by-election with a majority of 37,220 votes, securing a total of 64,998 votes in a straight fight with Barisan Nasional candidate, Raja Affandi Raja Noor.
Raja Affandi, a retired general and former defence forces chief, garnered 27,778 votes.
Two Umno Supreme Council members, namely Puad Zarkashi and Razlan Rafii have brushed off the calls for the party to reassess its cooperation with Pakatan Harapan.
