Umno cancels solidarity rally for Najib Razak

UMNO has decided to cancel its attendance at the ‘Solidarity with Datuk Seri Najib Razak’ rally in response to the royal decree issued by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

The party, in a statement, expressed its full respect for the prerogative powers of the King as outlined in Articles 42(1) and (2) of the Federal Constitution, which govern the procedures for seeking a pardon.

“In line with the principle of upholding the decree of His Majesty the King and the directive from the Inspector-General of Police, Umno has decided not to proceed with the gathering scheduled for Jan 6, 2025,” party secretary-general Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said in a statement Friday.

“The party has always shown an unwavering commitment to upholding the Malay Rulers’ Institution, as enshrined in the party’s constitution.

“Umno consistently prioritises and accords the highest respect to His Majesty, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong,” he said.

Expressing full confidence in the wisdom of the King, he added that Umno believes justice will be served fairly in Najib’s case.

He also expressed gratitude to Umno members who had shown unwavering moral support for Najib despite the absence of any official directives from the party’s headquarters.

“The decision to cancel the rally underscores Umno’s commitment to the rule of law and its loyalty to the constitutional monarchy system,” he said.
