KEDAH Umno has called on Menteri Besar Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor to clarify the state government’s stance on the Songkran festival, following objections raised by Penang Pas, which deemed the celebration contrary to Islamic values and teachings.
Kedah Umno information chief Shaiful Hazizy Zainol Abidin said Penang Pas’ stance raises questions about the consistency of positions taken by its leadership in different states.
“Does the Kedah government share the same view as Penang Pas, or will it remain silent on an issue involving religious sensitivities and Malaysia’s multiracial harmony?” he said in a statement today.
He urged Sanusi to issue an official response, saying it would be a test of the state government’s commitment to inclusivity and its role in safeguarding cultural and religious rights.
Yesterday, Penang Pas objected to the upcoming Sonic Splash Songkran Music Beach Party, organised by Ferringhi Heart Beach Club Malaysia, which is scheduled to take place this weekend.
Penang Pas information chief Muhammad Fawwaz Mohamad Jan said the event clearly promotes indecency and undermines values that are upheld by divine teachings.
Meanwhile, Kedah State Chinese, Indian and Siamese Communities Committee Chairman Wong Chia Zhen said the state government would not prohibit the organisation of the festival despite the objections raised by Penang Pas.
“Why wouldn’t it be continued? We have always been an inclusive government.
“There is no issue in Kedah at the moment. The Menteri Besar recently said, ‘Kedah Sejahtera is a blessing for all,’ reaffirming that no one is left behind,” he said.
Songkran, the traditional Thai New Year celebration, is marked by water-splashing festivities symbolising purification and renewal.
