AS UNCERTAINTY looms over the future of both MCA and MIC in the Barisan Nasional (BN) camp, Umno secretary-general Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki has called on both parties to remain patient.
Assuring that no party will be sidelined, Asyraf said the current situation is largely due to changing political dynamics across the country.
He said the spirit of BN remains strong, with MCA and MIC being loyal partners, and that the current landscape requires all parties, including Umno, to remain patient and avoid arrogance.
“We cannot afford to be arrogant or boastful, acting as if we can control everything.
“We must no longer believe we are strong enough to stand alone and refuse to work with others; we have to be realistic and practical.
“All BN component parties, including Umno, have incumbent seats they need to retain in order to secure victory in all 30 parliamentary constituencies. To win, we must work together.
“The party’s top leadership will come together to discuss and negotiate for more seats to contest in the general election.
“We must not jump the gun or make demands as if we should stand alone and avoid working with others… that kind of arrogance and ego has no place in our structure,” he told reporters after opening the Rompin Umno division delegates’ meeting in Muadzam Shah on Sunday.
Asyraf said BN has always been open-minded and welcomes discussions, negotiations and cooperation with all parties.
He was responding to questions about several MCA divisions across the country that had unanimously passed resolutions to become an independent national political entity and reject political cooperation with DAP.
