Amendment is not for my interest, says Zahid

KUALA LUMPUR, May 14 – Party President Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said that the amendment to the party’s constitution at the Extraordinary General Assembly this Sunday is not for himself but for the survival of Umno itself.
He said there were allegations that it is to safeguard the president’s political survival. “It’s wrong. It’s for the party.”

“The meeting on 15 May is aimed at amending the party’s constitution. It is in line with our General Assembly resolution. Of course, the amendments that will be the focus on party elections should be held within six months after the General Election (GE).”

He explained that the amendment aims to ensure the entire strength of Umno can be mobilised to face the GE without much threat and risk.
“It is also another step and an effort to empower Umno in facing the future challenges,” he said in a FB posting.
The Bagan Datuk MP also said the amendment will put Umno in the most organised manner, and therefore should be able to meet the needs of any situation.
“It is for the party, not for me. The grassroots have decided it at PAU,” he said.
