KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 27 – UMNO President Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi is confident that Wanita UMNO together with Pemuda and Puteri will play an important role in ensuring the party victory in the next general election.

He said some Wanita members had yesterday asked him to pen his take on the role of Wanita UMNO Malaysia.

“Alhamdulillah, I had the opportunity to spend time yesterday, fulfilling their wishes. I first wrote that ‘the hands swinging a cradle can shake the world’.

“In this proverb, women have been portrayed in a very concise expression. For me, those words are enough to describe how high my views are on the role of women in UMNO struggle. It implicitly means that women are gentle and motherly, their role, contribution and services in developing UMNO are undeniable,” he said in a post on Facebook, today.

Zahid who is also Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman and Member of Parliament for Bagan Datuk, explained that history has seen the major role of Wanita UMNO in cultivating awareness and high spirit among women in quest for Independence.

He added that history has seen how resilient the struggle of Wanita UMNO in dignifying the position of women in this country is. Although met with various challenges, they managed to overcome it.

Wanita today is the largest component of UMNO. In some branches and divisions, there are more female members than males.

“For that, Wanita has always been feared by political opponents because of its status as the ‘backbone’ of the party since long. True, like male members, there are also those who strayed from the struggle.

“A great honor to the loyalty of Wanita UMNO members on the struggle for religion, race and country,” he said.
