KUALA LUMPUR, Apr 18 – A viral video advertising of gambling activities against the backdrop of Ramadan and Aidilfitri is very offensive to Muslims in Malaysia, said UMNO Deputy President Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan.
In this regard, he said the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) must come forward immediately to explain how this could happen and be allowed to operate.
“It is insensitive and very outrageous, especially during the holy month of Muslims,” he said in a statement via his Facebook page today.
He said, there were many cases where creative content like these were allowed to be on the internet although it is sensitive and offensive to racial harmony.
“MCMC should provide an explanation on how the video can become viral for quite some time.
“It seems that the guidelines and content ethic that are in line with the culture and norms of Malaysian society are no longer sufficient. Malaysia needs effective preventive measures and not reactive measures. ”
He said, immediate and total eradication of all immoral content on the internet must be a priority for SKMM, including online and unlicensed gambling activities.
“Do not put our prosperity and harmony at stake due to the failure to regulate contents like these.”
