Malaysia should call ASEAN meeting on Myanmar coup

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 2 – UMNO Deputy President Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan said Malaysia should call for an emergency meeting among all ASEAN nations to find amicable solution for Myanmar.

He said the coup by Myanmar army is very saddening as it has negative bearing on the country’s reformation agenda.

“Malaysia must press for the release of all National League for Democracy (NLD) leaders and for their rights be fully respected.

“The junta should respect the election result in last November which gave major victory to the NLD, which is 356 out of 412 seats,” he said in a statement.

Mohamad who is also Rantau State Assemblyman said ASEAN could no longer act as an observer to the conflict.

“Reinstating democracy and observing the human rights is ASEAN priority and it must act accordingly for peace and stability in the regiion,” he said.

According to reports, Myanmar junta has arrested Aung San Suu Kyi, President U Win Myint and other senior officials at the city of Naypyidaw. International media reports that the army staged a coup by declaring a year state of emergency amid claim that the last election was rigged.
